How do you cross breed two different types of plants?

A minneola is a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit- but what I don't understand is how you cross two different plants (or fruits in this case) to create a hybrid of the two. Can anybody explain this?

  1. Google Hybridization + grafting.
  2. Hopefully they both flower at the same time, but if they don't you will have to save the pollen from the one that flowers first. You then remove all the stamens from the intended flower to prevent self pollination or a cross with a different plant. Then using a small camel hair paint brush you can paint the pollen on the sticky stigma of the pistil. Then tie a baggie around it to prevent any more pollination. If you saved the whole stamens and they are big enough you can use this to paint the pollen on to stigma. When the ovary begins to bulge you can remove the baggie. From this point the fruit will grow and when it ripens you can remove the seeds and plant them. I don't think citrus seeds have to dry first.
  3. The two plant species should be compatible with each other to make a hybrid out of them. The pollen grain should be able to germinate onto the stigma of the female plant of the different species. The flowering of the two plant should be at the same time.
